U.S. hunting license sales show upward trend

National hunting license sales in the United States have seen a modest upward trend, reaching approximately 16 million in recent years. While participation has risen compared to a decade ago, the percentage of the total population that hunts remains below 5%, which is lower than the 7.2% peak recorded in 1982.

Whitetail deer hunting is the most popular activity, accounting for 57% of all hunting. Among deer hunters, 63% utilize firearms, while archery and crossbow use are also noted. Data indicates that 95% of hunters or their families consume the meat they harvest, though public opinion varies regarding trophy hunting.

Safety remains a concern, as 70% of deer hunting injuries are attributed to hunters failing to wear hunter orange. Despite these risks, per capita hunting fatalities remain rare.
