US hybrid workers prioritize outdoor lunch breaks for mental clarity
A survey of 2,000 hybrid workers conducted by Talker Research for Wild Planet indicates that many American employees struggle to take meaningful breaks during the workday. The research found that 56% of workers remain indoors throughout their entire workday, excluding commutes, and 85% occasionally skip lunch breaks entirely.
Despite these challenges, there is a strong desire for improved break culture. Approximately 91% of respondents view taking a lunch break as essential, and 78% expressed a preference for eating lunch outdoors. The study noted a correlation between outdoor breaks and improved well-being; while only 51% of workers reported high happiness levels before eating lunch outdoors, that figure rose to 66% after doing so.
Barriers to stepping outside include excessive meetings or tasks (29%) and the perceived pressure to remain constantly available to colleagues (25%). Many workers believe that fresh air and screen breaks are vital for resetting focus and maintaining mental clarity.
