Two Mexicans charged in Texas for trafficking migrant children

Two Mexican nationals, Susana Guadian and Daniel Guadian, appeared in a Texas federal court facing charges for conspiracy to transport and introduce undocumented children into the United States for profit. The pair, residents of Ciudad Juárez, are accused of being part of a smuggling organization that moved unaccompanied minors aged 5 to 13 from Mexico to the U.S. between May and October 2024.

According to judicial documents, the organization recruited drivers to transport children in vehicles to border entry points. These drivers and accomplices allegedly used false documents to claim they were the children's parents. In at least one instance, the group reportedly gave the children THC-infused gummies to sedate them during the journey. One minor required hospitalization after being diagnosed with marijuana intoxication.

Once across the border, the children were reportedly taken to El Paso, where they were collected by other individuals. The U.S. Department of Justice stated that protecting children from traffickers is a top priority. The defendants were arrested in Mexico and subsequently extradited to the United States.

Separately, reports have highlighted the challenges faced by unaccompanied migrant children in U.S. immigration courts, such as those in Harlingen, Texas, where many minors appear without legal representation to defend their right to remain in the country.
