US immigration officials redirected to investigate voter fraud allegations

President Donald Trump’s administration has redirected hundreds of federal employees from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to investigate alleged voter fraud. These officials, originally tasked with reviewing immigration applications for security risks and accuracy, are now being used to cross-reference voter data to identify non-citizens registered to vote.

This shift has reportedly brought standard immigration processing to a standstill. Additionally, the Department of Justice has realigned its voting section, moving away from its traditional focus on discrimination and voter access toward fraud investigations.

While many of the administration’s efforts to fundamentally alter voting laws—such as restricting mail-in ballots or implementing strict citizenship proof requirements—have been blocked by courts, experts warn of significant consequences. Analysts from the Brennan Center for Justice note that although legal challenges have largely thwarted these policy changes, the campaign has succeeded in creating widespread confusion and uncertainty among voters ahead of the upcoming elections.
