Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that the Strait of Hormuz is "completely closed" after two oil tankers exploded while attempting to navigate a mined passage. Tehran warned that no oil or gas will be exported through the strait while U.S. military actions continue. The United States has sustained a campaign of air raids for more than 140 days, targeting Iranian military sites and deploying over 50,000 service members across the Middle East. CENTCOM redirected five commercial vessels and maintained a naval blockade of Iranian ports. In response, Iran has threatened a "total offensive" and has enlisted Yemen’s Houthi rebels to threaten the Bab el‑Mandeb Strait, creating a dual‑chokepoint strategy that could pressurise global oil shipments. The EU and Gulf Cooperation Council issued a joint statement reaffirming that freedom of navigation in the strait is protected under international law. Despite U.S. claims of damaging Iran’s underground port tunnels, Tehran quickly reopened them, signaling resilience and a willingness to sustain maritime operations despite the ongoing conflict.
