U.S. expands sanctions against Cuba's military and mining sectors
The United States has expanded economic sanctions against Cuba, targeting 11 entities and individuals to disrupt revenue streams for the Cuban military and mining sectors. Under Executive Order 14404, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced measures against four state-run nickel mining companies and four military-linked companies involved in weapons development, naval technology, and battlefield simulation. Additionally, three military officials overseeing these operations have been sanctioned.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel responded by calling the sanctions “imperial dictates” and stating that the “list of sanctioned will be endless.” Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez characterized the move as a policy of “maximum economic strangulation.”
In a separate diplomatic development, Costa Rica has officially severed ties with the Cuban government, expelling Cuban diplomatic staff and closing its own embassy on the island. Costa Rican Foreign Minister Manuel Tovar stated the decision was a sovereign move to maintain political coherence and refused to acknowledge claims of U.S. pressure behind the decision.
