U.S. imposes terror sanctions on Italy-based A/I Collective

The U.S. State and Treasury Departments have announced terror sanctions against the Italy-based Autistici/Inventati, also known as the A/I Collective. The administration alleges the group provides essential digital infrastructure—including encrypted communications, web hosting, and anonymity tools—to violent far-left movements and terrorist networks globally.

According to federal officials, the A/I Collective has supported groups such as Rose City Antifa, the Stop Cop City movement, and Jane’s Revenge. The latter group claimed responsibility for firebombing pregnancy centers following the leak of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs opinion. The U.S. government asserts the collective enables these groups to publish communiqués and incite criminal acts.

The A/I Collective has denied the allegations, stating that “antifascism and anticapitalism are not terrorism” and that “protesting is not terrorism.” The group is reportedly exploring legal options to challenge the sanctions, which prohibit U.S. citizens and companies from providing financial support to the collective.

Civil liberties advocates, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation, have warned that designating a service provider as a terrorist organization rather than the individuals committing violence has significant implications for internet free speech. They argue the move targets the “messenger” and threatens the ability of various groups to maintain privacy and anonymity online.
