Trump and Modi to resolve Russian oil tariff dispute, says US official
White House adviser Peter Navarro stated that President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will work directly to resolve trade tensions regarding India's purchase of Russian oil. Navarro emphasized the “very good working relationship” between the two leaders as a means to settle the dispute.
The comments follow the US Senate's 86-11 bipartisan approval of the Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. This legislation authorizes the president to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries, including India and China, that continue to import Russian oil and gas, citing concerns that such trade funds Moscow's military operations in Ukraine.
Navarro noted that while India's involvement in the Russian oil trade expanded significantly after the invasion of Ukraine, he suggested certain aspects of the issue had been resolved. India has previously defended its energy purchases as a necessity for national energy security.
