U.S. Indo‑Pacific Commander Admiral Samuel Paparo Warns No Nation Will Dominate Region

Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of the U.S. Indo‑Pacific Command, told a regional security conference in Malaysia that the United States will not allow any country to dominate the Indo‑Pacific. He said China and other actors are using “false claims of legitimacy” to justify intimidation and coercion, turning law into a tool of raw power. Paparo emphasized that freedom of navigation, maritime security and open commerce are essential for regional stability and that disputes should be resolved peacefully with respect for the sovereignty of all nations.

The remarks came amid heightened tensions in the South China Sea, where Chinese vessels have repeatedly confronted Philippine ships around a disputed shoal, using water cannons and attempting to block resupply missions. The Philippines’ defense secretary, Gilberto Teodoro, reiterated Manila’s resolve to push back against Chinese pressure. The United States maintains it does not take sides in sovereignty claims but supports international law and the right of states to operate freely in the region.
