US industrial production stalls in August as manufacturing output declines

United States manufacturing output declined by 0.3% in August, marking the first contraction of the year. According to Federal Reserve data, this decline in manufacturing was offset by a 1.8% increase in utility production, leaving total industrial production unchanged.

Key sectors experienced varying performance. Business equipment output fell by 0.5%, and defense and space equipment production dropped by 1.2%. Additionally, automotive production saw a 1.2% decrease. These declines are attributed to rising input costs, including oil and other materials, as well as supply chain disruptions linked to conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Industrial capacity utilization stood at approximately 76.3%, which is below the long-run average. While the manufacturing sector had seen several months of growth previously, the August data suggests a potential pause in that momentum. Despite the manufacturing slip, the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index for September remained elevated, indicating continued activity in certain regions.
