US initiatives target voter turnout and reparations legal battles
The Congressional Black Caucus Institute has launched ‘So Vote’, a $4.5 million initiative designed to increase voter turnout among young, rural, and Black communities across the South, Midwest, and West. The campaign utilizes grassroots partnerships and former lawmakers to address historic gaps in civic engagement.
In Illinois, the federal government has joined a lawsuit challenging a landmark reparations program in Evanston. The program provides $25,000 housing grants to Black residents to address historical housing discrimination and segregation. Legal experts suggest the court's decision could impact municipal equity programs nationwide.
Additionally, incarcerated individuals in Kansas raised over $4,000 to pay off local school lunch debts.
