U.S. insists on comprehensive agreement for military airport relocation

Disagreements have emerged between South Korea and the United States regarding the relocation of the Gwangju military airport. The South Korean Ministry of National Defense has reportedly sought to pursue a separate agreement specifically for Gwangju to expedite the process, aligning with government efforts to accelerate semiconductor industry development in the Honam region.

However, the United States maintains that a comprehensive agreement covering five Joint Operational Bases (COBs)—including Daegu, Gwangju, Cheongju, Gimhae, and Suwon—must be finalized first. U.S. forces in Korea have indicated that attempting to alter procedures for Gwangju alone could actually delay the process more than following the established comprehensive framework.

The South Korean government faces criticism from lawmakers regarding potential budget waste, as facilities currently under construction for the TA-50 Block2 program may need to be relocated before completion. Additionally, concerns have been raised about whether the push for speed might bypass necessary National Assembly consent required for comprehensive international agreements.
