U.S. integrates space launch goals with air traffic control modernization

The United States is advancing a dual-track initiative to modernize air traffic control systems and expand space transportation capabilities. A new administration policy aims to support more than 1,000 rocket launches and reentries by 2030. To achieve this, the Department of Transportation, in coordination with NASA and the Pentagon, has been directed to integrate space launch management into airspace modernization efforts and designate priority airspace for critical launch corridors within 180 days.

Parallel to these space objectives, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is progressing with a $12.5 billion overhaul of its aging telecommunications and radar infrastructure, targeting completion by 2028. As part of this effort, a new $40 million manufacturing facility operated by Rohde & Schwarz USA has opened in Frederick, Maryland. The 87,000-square-foot plant will produce digital Voice over IP (VoIP) voice switches, which are essential for communication between air traffic controllers and pilots. The FAA intends to deploy 450 of these new digital switches nationwide.
