US intelligence agencies clash over information sharing, hindering national security assessments

The Central Intelligence Agency has stopped providing certain intelligence assessments, including those related to the conflict with Iran, after a growing dispute with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). The disagreement centers on a Director‑initiated group created in April 2025 by Tulsi Gabbard, which the CIA says bypasses traditional sharing protocols, while ODNI officials accuse the CIA of systematically blocking the group’s access to data. The rift threatens the flow of analysis that U.S. presidents have long relied on, especially as the country faces security challenges ranging from China’s military expansion to Russia’s war in Ukraine. Former intelligence officials warned that “ODNI should be the oil that keeps the gears of the system running,” highlighting the risk of compartmentalised intelligence failures. President Trump has named Bill Pulte as interim director of national intelligence amid the turmoil.
