US intelligence warns of potential Russian attacks on NATO through 2029
New US intelligence assessments indicate that Russia could launch a limited attack on a NATO member state between this autumn and 2029. This represents a shift in Washington’s strategic thinking, as analysts previously assumed Vladimir Putin would avoid direct confrontation with the alliance while engaged in Ukraine.
The potential scenarios described by officials include cyberattacks, deniable operations using unmarked armed groups, or a limited land incursion on NATO’s eastern flank, specifically targeting the Baltic states or Poland. While a ground incursion is considered the least likely scenario, officials noted that the probability of such actions could increase over time.
Analysts suggest this shift in Russian posture may be driven by domestic and military pressures, including minimal territorial gains in Ukraine and increased Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. Such a move would aim to challenge NATO’s credibility and test the alliance’s mutual-defense clause, Article 5.
