While US sheepmeat production has seen a long-term structural decline—falling from roughly 155,000 tonnes in 1989 to approximately 60,000 tonnes in recent years—the timing of Australian import increases does not strictly align with the periods of sharpest domestic contraction. For instance, between 1990 and 1994, US production dropped by about 24,490 tonnes, while Australian shipments increased by only 502 tonnes.
