U.S. investigates cyberattacks on energy tankers

U.S. federal agencies are investigating a series of sophisticated cyberattacks targeting commercial energy tankers transiting the Strait of Gibraltar. The incidents have raised concerns regarding maritime security and potential involvement by Iranian-aligned actors.

One vessel, the Liberian-flagged VL Prosperity, was carrying over 2 million barrels of oil from Egypt to Texas when it experienced a 30-hour communications blackout and engine-room system malfunctions. Attackers reportedly infiltrated the engine-room systems, manipulating cooling flow, engine speed, and disabling fuel and oil tank systems. The FBI and U.S. Coast Guard boarded the vessel in the Gulf of Mexico on August 21 to address vulnerabilities.

A second vessel, the Vivit Africa LNG, which loaded cargo at a Louisiana terminal, also experienced system malfunctions. Hackers allegedly gained temporary control of steam pressure and safety valve systems during its transit. The malfunction disrupted automated tank pressure controls and boil-off gas management, forcing the ship to idle off the coast of Italy before altering course toward Spain, ultimately failing to deliver its cargo to its Italian buyer.

Federal intelligence agencies are currently monitoring approximately 20 commercial vessels globally following these incidents.
