US-Iran tensions escalate amid stalled talks and Minab strike

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has noted a stalemate in negotiations between the United States and Iran, a situation exacerbated by the ongoing crisis involving Houthi rebels and instability in the Bab el-Mandeb strait. Fidan highlighted a significant lack of trust between the two nations, noting that while previous agreements were reached in the past, difficulties in implementation have led both sides to pursue interests more unilaterally.

Compounding these diplomatic tensions is a reported missile strike in Minab, Iran. According to reports, two US Tomahawk missiles struck a primary school near a naval base, resulting in at least 157 deaths, including 123 children. The strike was reportedly facilitated by Palantir’s Maven Smart System, which allegedly used outdated satellite imagery to misidentify the school as part of the military base.

While Palantir stated its software is not responsible for errors in data, the incident has drawn intense international scrutiny. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights described the event with “deep horror,” and a UN fact-finding mission suggested there are “reasonable grounds” to consider the strike a war crime. The US State Department has rejected these findings, accusing the UN of spreading anti-American rhetoric.
