US-Israel relations face strain amid Gaza peace plan rejection

The long-standing bipartisan consensus in the United States regarding unconditional military support for Israel is facing significant strain. Within the Democratic Party, over 100 House members recently supported an amendment to block billions of dollars in aid to Israel, citing humanitarian concerns in Gaza and international law. Democratic leadership has called for a “major reset” of US-Israel relations, while Senate efforts to restrict arms transfers have gained traction.

Simultaneously, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected a US-proposed roadmap for Gaza. The plan, associated with Donald Trump, aimed to facilitate the disarmament of Hamas in exchange for a progressive withdrawal of Israeli troops. Netanyahu maintains that the Israeli military will not withdraw until Hamas is “truly disarmed” of all weapons, ranging from heavy to light arms. This rejection complicates efforts to implement a transition of governance to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), a technocratic body currently blocked from entering the territory.
