US job gains dip as Eurozone unemployment stalls

The United States added only 57,000 non‑farm jobs in June, far below the revised 129,000 jobs recorded in May and well under analysts' median forecast of 115,000. The unemployment rate slipped to 4.2%, the lowest level since March, while the labor‑force participation rate fell by 0.3 percentage points to 61.5%. Gains were led by professional and business services, with modest increases in social assistance, health care and government employment. Conversely, leisure and hospitality lost 61,000 jobs, reflecting slower seasonal hiring.

In the euro area, seasonally adjusted unemployment held steady at 6.2% in May, unchanged from April, and the broader European Union’s rate remained at 5.9%. The number of unemployed fell modestly compared with the previous month, but youth unemployment in the EU edged up to 15.2% in May. Female unemployment stayed at 6.2% in the EU, while male unemployment edged down to 5.7%, mirroring slight gender‑specific shifts in the eurozone.
