U.S. job market shows seasonal ‘September Surge’ in postings

The U.S. job market is experiencing a seasonal trend known as the ‘September Surge,’ where job postings typically increase following a summer decline. According to LinkedIn data, job postings in the U.S. dip in August but rise to levels 14% above March levels in September and 11% above in October.

While job postings peak in the fall, LinkedIn analysis indicates a mismatch in application volume. Job applications generally peak between January and May and decline through the rest of the year. This trend may create opportunities for job seekers, as the number of applicants does not rise in tandem with the increase in available positions.

Recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that U.S. employers added 162,000 jobs in August, with previous estimates for June and July being revised upward by a combined 55,000. The unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1%.
