Jones Act waiver extended 90 days for foreign vessels FAST-MOVING
The Trump administration has extended a waiver of the Jones Act for 90 days, effective August 17. This measure allows foreign-flagged vessels to transport goods, such as oil, fertilizers, and soybean oil, between U.S. ports. The extension aims to ensure the U.S. military and critical industries maintain uninterrupted access to essential resources amid energy market disruptions caused by the conflict with Iran and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Unlike previous blanket exemptions, the new terms introduce stricter oversight. The Pentagon will now consult with the Maritime Administration to conduct case-by-case reviews of individual voyages to determine if they qualify for the waiver. This change follows pressure from the domestic maritime and shipbuilding industries, which argue that broad waivers undermine American maritime capacity and employment.
White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers noted that the waiver has already contributed to increased domestic deliveries of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. The current suspension marks the longest in the 106-year history of the Jones Act.
