US judge blocks Trump’s mail‑voting rule changes

Federal District Judge Indira Talwani in Massachusetts issued a temporary injunction halting key provisions of President Donald Trump’s executive order that sought stricter rules for mail‑in voting. The order, signed on March 31, would have required the Department of Homeland Security to create state‑by‑state voter eligibility lists and forced the United States Postal Service to deliver ballots only to voters on those lists. Talwani ruled the measures unconstitutional, stating the president lacks authority to alter election procedures historically managed by states and local officials.

The lawsuit was brought by a coalition of 23 states and the District of Columbia, most of them governed by Democrats, arguing that the decree would cause administrative chaos and threaten voters’ rights ahead of the November congressional elections. The administration said it will appeal the decision.

The ruling is part of ongoing legal battles over Trump’s repeated, unsubstantiated claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 election and his broader efforts to reshape U.S. election rules.
