U.S. Judge Orders Release of Monterey County Jail Medical Inspection Reports

Federal District Judge Beth Labson Freeman ruled that the previously sealed medical inspection reports of Monterey County Jail must be made public. The decision overturns the county’s claim that the documents were protected under a court order and that neutral medical monitors opposed disclosure. At least three monitors indicated no objection to releasing the reports, provided that confidential inmate health information was redacted.

The reports stem from a long‑standing federal oversight of the jail after years of alleged mistreatment of inmates. The county’s legal office and the sheriff’s department had failed to provide the reports to the Board of Supervisors, which is a defendant in the litigation. The healthcare contractor, Wellpath, which supplies medical services to the jail, announced plans to appeal the ruling.
