U.S. June Job Openings Fall to 7.36 Million

The U.S. Labor Department’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) for June showed job openings at 7.359 million, a decline of 178,000 from the previous month and below the 7.400 million forecast. The job‑openings rate slipped to 4.4 % from 4.5 % in May.

Hiring rose by 96,000 to a total of 5.348 million, lifting the hires rate to 3.4 % from 3.3 % in May. Layoffs and discharges were essentially unchanged at about 1.8 million, a rate of 1.1 %. Voluntary quits held steady at 3.2 million, a 2.0 % quit rate.

Sector‑specific changes included a 147,000 drop in healthcare and social assistance openings, while transport, warehousing and utilities added 97,000 jobs and the federal government added 39,000. Wholesale trade, nondurable‑goods manufacturing and mining each saw declines.

The Federal Reserve kept its benchmark overnight rate in the 3.5 %–3.75 % range, with three committee members dissenting in favor of a quarter‑point hike. Economists expect the labor market’s gradual cooling to allow the Fed to focus on inflation.
