US Justice Department Seeks Capture of Mexico Governor Rubén Rocha Moya

The United States Department of Justice has formally requested the capture and extradition of Rubén Rocha Moya, the governor of Sinaloa and member of the Morena party, alleging links to the Sinaloa drug cartel. The request, made 57 days ago, follows accusations that Rocha Moya collaborated with organized crime and that his administration facilitated criminal activities.

Rocha Moya took a temporary leave of absence in early May, which was approved by the Sinaloa Congress to allow him to cooperate with investigations stemming from U.S. allegations. Mexican authorities have not confirmed any arrest, while President Claudia Sheinbaum’s government stresses respect for due process. The move has intensified political debate in Mexico, with critics labeling the governor a “narco‑governor” and supporters demanding proof before any legal action.

The case highlights tensions between the United States and Mexico over cross‑border criminal investigations and could have significant implications for regional politics and U.S.–Mexico diplomatic relations.
