California election officials face DOJ lawsuit over suspected noncitizen voters

The U.S. Department of Justice has charged 28 green card holders in California with election-related crimes, including fraudulent voter registration and making false statements on naturalization applications. This action is part of “Operation Protect the Vote,” a federal initiative aimed at identifying noncitizens on voter rolls ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

In a related legal escalation, the Justice Department filed an emergency request for a temporary restraining order to compel California to segregate up to 20,000 ballots identified as belonging to “likely noncitizens.” Federal officials claim these individuals may have been sent mail-in ballots despite being ineligible to vote.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has dismissed the litigation as a “reckless political stunt,” arguing that the 28 charged individuals represent only 0.0001% of the state’s 23 million registered voters. State and local officials in Los Angeles County have challenged the reliability of the federal list, noting that a preliminary review of a sample suggested some individuals on the list may actually be U.S.-born citizens.
