US Justice Department to deploy election monitors to polling stations

U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche announced that the Department of Justice is expanding investigations into alleged election crimes ahead of the midterm elections. This initiative includes a plan to deploy approximately one thousand election monitors to polling locations across the country to ensure elections are conducted “legally fairly and appropriately.”

Blanche defended the deployment against critics who argue the presence of federal agents could serve as voter intimidation. He stated that the DOJ has utilized such monitoring since the 1960s and urged lawmakers to view the presence of government officials as a measure of readiness rather than a threat. He emphasized that monitors would be sent to every state, not just Democratic-leaning ones.

In response to the DOJ's plan, Senator Tammy Baldwin has introduced the “Safe Access to the Polls Act.” The legislation aims to protect voters from potential interference or intimidation by federal agents at polling sites, asserting that democracy depends on the ability of citizens to cast ballots without fear.
