US labels Brazil's CV and PCC gangs as terrorist groups; courts await notice

The United States announced that the criminal organizations Comando Vermelho (CV) and Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) are now classified as terrorist entities. The decision, set to take effect on June 5 under the Trump administration, was made using immigration law provisions.

Edson Fachin, president of Brazil's Supreme Court and the National Justice Council, said the Brazilian judiciary has not yet received any official notification of the U.S. move. He emphasized that any response from the National Justice Council will depend on formal communication from the United States, noting that the matter currently resides within diplomatic channels. Experts warned that the designation could threaten Brazil's sovereignty and complicate investigative cooperation between the two countries.
