US private payrolls add 44,000 jobs in July, missing forecasts

The ADP national employment report showed that U.S. private‑sector employers added 44,000 jobs in July 2026, the smallest gain in the past six months and well below market expectations of roughly 70,000‑75,000 jobs. June’s private‑sector gain was revised down to 95,000 jobs.

Job growth was concentrated in services, which added 47,000 positions, driven largely by education and health services (36,000 jobs). Goods‑producing industries posted a net loss of 3,000 jobs. The leisure and hospitality sector shed 11,000 jobs, while trade, transportation and utilities lost 8,000.

Wage growth remained robust: workers who stayed in the same job saw annual earnings rise 4.4%, while job‑switchers experienced a 7% increase, the fastest pace in almost a year. The ADP report is produced in partnership with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab and is released ahead of the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ official non‑farm payrolls report.

Economists had forecast a private‑sector increase of about 70,000 jobs, and the ADP figures are traditionally viewed as a leading indicator, though they have often diverged from the BLS numbers.
