US Labor Market Gains Momentum as Legal Hiring Peaks

The U.S. Labor Department reported that employers added 172,000 jobs in May, far exceeding the 105,000 forecast, and the unemployment rate held steady at 4.3%. While the overall hiring pace has improved, real wage growth slowed to 3.4% and many workers remain stuck in low‑pay positions, raising concerns about the durability of the recovery.

In a separate sector‑specific trend, the legal job market reached a historic high in May. Law firms, corporate legal departments and government agencies drove the surge, with strong demand for attorneys in litigation, compliance, privacy and transactional work. The hiring boom extended to entry‑level positions, while firms accelerated hiring cycles and offered competitive compensation to attract talent. Regulatory pressures and corporate restructurings were cited as key drivers of the expanded legal workforce.
