US labor market shows stability amid AI job growth
The United States labor market is exhibiting complex trends characterized by both traditional economic shifts and technological transformation. While September job growth fell significantly below expectations at 29,000 compared to the forecasted 90,000, the unemployment rate remained relatively stable, moving slightly from 4.1% to 4.2%. If the unemployment rate continues to stay below 5%, the US could approach a record for consecutive months at that level, a milestone not seen since the mid-1960s.
Simultaneously, artificial intelligence is reshaping employment structures. Data from LinkedIn indicates that AI has contributed to nearly 2 million new jobs globally over the last three years. In the US, AI-related roles command significantly higher salaries, averaging approximately $177,000 per year compared to $80,000 for other positions. Demand is surging for specialized roles such as AI implementation specialists, AI forensic analysts, and AI safety experts.
Furthermore, the expansion of AI infrastructure is driving growth in the data center sector. Job postings related to data centers in the US have more than doubled over the past two years. The US currently accounts for roughly 40% of the global data center workforce, with major hubs located in Virginia, California, and Texas.
