Iran closes Strait of Hormuz, US conducts third round of airstrikes

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that the Strait of Hormuz is closed “until further notice and until the end of US interference in the region” after warning shots struck a vessel that it said had turned off its tracking systems and attempted an unauthorized route. The ship, identified by Iranian officials as the Cyprus‑flagged container vessel M/V GFS Galaxy, suffered severe engine‑room damage, a fire aboard, and a missing civilian crew member.

In response, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) launched a third round of airstrikes against Iranian military sites later that day, stating, “At 7:15 p.m. ET today, U.S. Central Command forces began launching the third round of strikes this week against Iran.” The strikes hit targets in several provinces, causing casualties and infrastructure damage; U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called Iran’s actions “a poor choice.”

Both sides exchanged further threats: Iran warned that any new US aggression would be met with “severe retaliation” against regional bases, while President Donald Trump declared the cease‑fire over and signaled possible additional action. Diplomatic talks mediated by Oman and Qatar continue, but the closure threatens the flow of roughly one‑fifth of the world’s oil, pushing fuel prices higher and keeping global markets on alert.
