Mexican Ambassador to US to Meet Family of Lorenzo Salgado, Killed by ICE in Texas
Lorenzo Salgado, a Mexican construction worker who had lived in the United States for more than three decades, was shot and killed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during a traffic stop in Houston, Texas, on July 7. ICE said Salgado attempted to ram agents with his vehicle; his family and witnesses dispute that claim. The death has prompted the Mexican government to file 20 complaints with state and county prosecutors in the United States over the deaths of 17 Mexican nationals since May. Mexican Ambassador to the United States, Roberto Lazzeri, will meet Salgado’s family in Texas on Wednesday as part of Mexico’s diplomatic outreach.
Harris County prosecutors have opened an investigation into the use of force in the shooting. Congressional Democrats and the Hispanic Caucus have accused ICE of concealing evidence, alleging that an alleged white powder found in Salgado’s vehicle was mischaracterized as a drug, while Texas Department of Public Safety tests showed it was merely electrolyte powder. The same Caucus cited an FBI‑issued search warrant that described the substance as resembling methamphetamine. The incident follows the July 13 killing of Colombian national Joan Sebastián Durán by ICE agents in Maine, adding to concerns over ICE’s use of force.
