U.S. lawmakers debate Supreme Court independence and expansion

Ahead of the Supreme Court term beginning October 5, U.S. lawmakers expressed conflicting views regarding the nation’s highest court. Senator Dick Durbin criticized President Donald Trump for his social media attacks on justices, arguing that such rhetoric threatens judicial independence. Durbin also expressed regret over the Senate’s historical shift in the judicial confirmation process, specifically citing the decision to delay a vacancy fill after the 2016 election.

Representative Darrell Issa criticized the Senate's practice of delaying votes on nominees, suggesting that the lack of a required timeframe for up-or-down votes violates the intent of the Constitution. While lawmakers disagreed on the necessity of expanding the court, Democrats have proposed increasing the number of justices beyond nine, while Republicans have moved toward a constitutional amendment to cap the court at nine members.
