U.S. lawmakers face scrutiny over Social Security solvency and privatization

Republican lawmakers are facing criticism regarding their stances on the future of Social Security. Senator Ron Johnson has opposed raising the tax cap, a measure suggested to maintain the program's solvency. Critics argue that failing to raise the cap harms economic growth and the ability of seniors to afford essential goods like food and medicine.

Additionally, Representative David Valadao has been accused by the DCCC of supporting privatization efforts. Reports indicate Valadao voted for legislation described by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as a “backdoor for privatizing Social Security.” Concerns have also been raised regarding staff reductions at Social Security offices and proposals to cut disability benefits, amid predictions that the trust fund may deplete faster than previously estimated.
