US lawmakers propose $500 million PFAS relief bill as new water‑treatment technologies emerge
Representative Chellie Pingree of Maine introduced the Relief for Farmers Hit with PFAS Act (H.R. 6476) in the House, seeking $500 million in grants for 2026‑2029 to help states, territories and Native Nations monitor PFAS health impacts, fund research, and compensate farmers whose land or products test positive for the chemicals. The legislation follows growing evidence that per‑ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) raise risks of kidney cancer, hypertension, pre‑eclampsia and low birth weight among exposed agricultural communities.
Recent research from Texas A&M University shows that conventional wastewater‑recycling filters accumulate PFAS at higher rates than previously understood, creating a persistent waste stream and degrading filter performance. Engineers are responding with a suite of novel treatment methods—including foam‑fractionation, granular‑activated‑carbon systems, electrostatic capture, electro‑oxidation, and hydrothermal mineralization. The Colorado School of Mines has launched a $7 million PFAS Remedial Technology Engineering Center to coordinate academic, industry and federal efforts, while generative AI is being used to design new remediation catalysts and ion‑exchange resins.
