U.S. Lawmakers Propose Domestic H-1B Visa Renewal

Indian-American lawmakers Suhas Subramanyam and Raja Krishnamurthy are advocating for legislation that would allow H-1B professionals and various other foreign workers to renew their visas without leaving the United States.

The proposed ‘Domestic Visa Renewal Modernization Act’ aims to expand a 2024 pilot program. If passed, the bill would permit holders of H-1B, H-1B1, E, I, L, O, and P visas to renew their visa stamps domestically. This includes skilled professionals, executives of multinational companies, investors, journalists, athletes, and entertainers.

Proponents argue that the current requirement to visit a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad for renewals often leads to appointment delays, causing workers to be stranded outside the country away from their jobs and families. The measure is intended to modernize the immigration system, reduce backlogs, and allow consular officers abroad to focus on new applications and foreign policy priorities.
