US lawmakers propose extension of TPS for Ukrainian refugees

U.S. senators from both parties have introduced legislation to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ukrainian refugees before the current designation expires on October 19. The bipartisan proposal, led by Senators Richard Blumenthal, Lisa Murkowski, Chris Coons, and Bill Cassidy, aims to prevent the deportation of Ukrainians to an active war zone. According to the Migration Policy Institute, over 101,000 Ukrainians hold TPS status as of February 2026. This status allows holders to live and work legally in the U.S. without fear of deportation, though it does not provide a path to citizenship.

Separately, the revocation of TPS for approximately 300,000 Haitian residents in the U.S. has led to an increase in migration toward Canada. Many Haitians are attempting to enter Canada to seek asylum, often through risky routes, to avoid returning to Haiti, which the U.S. government has identified as extremely dangerous due to gang control and the lack of an effective central government. While Canada has a large Haitian diaspora, migrants face the risk of being turned back to U.S. authorities if denied entry.
