U.S. lawmakers raise concerns over immigration detention conditions

U.S. representatives and senators are raising alarms regarding the treatment and legal access of individuals held in immigration detention facilities.

In Massachusetts, Representatives Gabe Amo, Jake Auchincloss, and Becca Balint conducted an unannounced oversight visit to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) New England regional headquarters in Burlington. The lawmakers reported that while the facility is designed for short-term holding, detainees have been held for days without adequate food, beds, or showers. They questioned officials regarding compliance with federal law and the ability of detainees to access legal counsel.

Separately, Senator Adam Schiff expressed concern following a visit to a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility at San Francisco International Airport. Schiff noted that detainees, including lawful permanent residents, are often unable to contact family members or attorneys despite being provided with lists of legal groups. The facility, described as an in-transit lounge, has faced scrutiny as individuals are reportedly held for longer than the 72-hour maximum typically allowed under CBP policy.
