U.S. lawmakers seek permanent bans on Chinese vehicles and technology
U.S. lawmakers are advancing bipartisan efforts to tighten restrictions on Chinese technology and automotive products. In the Senate, a bipartisan bill led by Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) and Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) aims to make the current ban on Chinese vehicles permanent, preventing future administrations from granting exemptions to Chinese manufacturers.
Simultaneously, the Communications and Technology Transparency Act is being considered in the House of Representatives. This legislation, championed by Frank Pallone and Brett Guthrie, seeks to expand the scope of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) authority. By shifting the focus from “communications equipment and services” to “information and communications technology or services” (ICTS), the bill would allow for broader veto powers over a wider range of digital components, including microchips, servers, and data center hardware originating from China.
