US Lawmakers urge FBI probe into Illinois Hindu temple attack attempt

A bipartisan group of 105 US lawmakers is calling for a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) probe into an alleged attempted mass shooting at the Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple in Aurora, Illinois. The appeal, led by Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, seeks to determine if the incident constitutes a federal hate crime.

Prosecutors allege that 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis, a resident of Palatine, Illinois, attempted to carry out the shooting on October 11 but fled after his rifle malfunctioned. Paporakis, who reportedly identified as a neo-Nazi, is alleged to have authored an eight-page white supremacist manifesto targeting people of Indian descent.

Investigators recovered a rifle, body armor, white supremacist imagery, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Paporakis has been charged with making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of weapons. The congressional letter, addressed to FBI Director Kash Patel, warns of increasing threats against Indian-American and South Asian communities.
