U.S. lawmakers urge Marco Rubio to help release Palestinian doctor

Nearly 70 Democratic and independent members of the U.S. Congress have issued a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, urging him to work with the Israeli government to secure the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya. A pediatrician and the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, Abu Safiya has been held in Israeli custody for more than 500 days following his arrest in December 2024.

The Israel Defense Forces stated that Abu Safiya was apprehended due to suspected involvement in terrorist activities and holding a rank within Hamas. However, the doctor, his family, and various advocates deny these allegations. While the Israel Prison Service has rejected claims of abuse or medical neglect, human rights groups have called for his immediate release, citing reports of inadequate food and medical care.

The congressional letter, led by Representatives Maxine Dexter and Raul Ruiz, expressed “urgent concern” regarding Abu Safiya’s physical well-being and the “imminent threats” to his life. The lawmakers are calling for the Secretary of State to advocate for an end to his detention during upcoming engagements with Israeli officials.
