Great Sea Interconnector advances with US support and new investment filings
The Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), a subsea electricity project linking Greece, Cyprus, and Israel, is seeing significant regulatory and geopolitical momentum. Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) has officially submitted an investment request to the energy regulators of Cyprus and Israel. This filing, made under the EU’s TEN-E framework, seeks to determine the cross-border cost allocation for the Cyprus-Israel section of the project.
In the United States, a bipartisan group of lawmakers, led by Representatives Brad Schneider and Gus Bilirakis, has urged the Trump administration to prioritize the GSI as a strategic interest. In a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and DFC head Benjamin Blac, lawmakers described the project as a vital component of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and a means to diversify energy routes in the Eastern Mediterranean.
On the commercial front, French investment group Meridiam has recently signed an agreement to become the majority shareholder in the GSI company for the Greece-Cyprus section. Feasibility studies indicate the project is economically viable across various scenarios and is expected to enhance regional energy security, support renewable energy integration, and end Cyprus’s energy isolation from the European grid.
