US lawmakers urge restraint amid escalating protests in Albania
United States lawmakers from both the Democratic and Republican parties are calling for an end to violence and the protection of peaceful protest rights in Albania. Following recent clashes between police and demonstrators in Tirana, which resulted in arrests and injuries, US officials have expressed concern over the escalating tensions.
Democratic Congressman Jim McGovern stated that the government must stop violence against protesters, guarantee the rule of law, and listen to the people's aspirations. He noted that citizens take to the streets when their government fails to meet their needs.
The protests, which began in May as environmental movements against development projects in protected areas—often referred to as the ‘Flamingo Revolution’ or ‘Autumn Revolution’—have evolved into a broader movement against the administration of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Key demands from protesters include the resignation of Prime Minister Rama, the establishment of a technical government with a limited mandate, electoral reforms, and a new social contract.
