U.S. leaders clash over artificial intelligence regulation

U.S. political leaders are divided over the necessity of federal and international regulation for artificial intelligence. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, speaking at an AI summit in Pittsburgh, called for the federal government to establish ‘strict guardrails,’ including third-party oversight of frontier models and increased transparency. Shapiro criticized President Donald Trump’s approach, arguing that the administration’s dismissal of AI risks as a ‘hoax’ ignores real public concerns and the need for international collaboration.

In contrast, Vice President JD Vance argued that the responsibility for managing AI risks lies with the developers themselves. Speaking on the All-In Podcast, Vance suggested that companies should not build ‘Frankenstein’ technology and then immediately seek government intervention. He proposed that if companies create systems they cannot control, they should focus on developing defensive tools to counter those risks.

President Trump has rejected calls for increased oversight, characterizing concerns regarding AI’s existential threats as a ‘sick conspiracy.’ Meanwhile, industry leaders, including Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei, have urged for coordinated international oversight to manage the rapid pace of technological advancement.
