US legal developments involve Nevada elector case and Texas election grant lawsuits

A Nevada judge has dismissed a case against six Republican electors accused of submitting a false certificate claiming Donald Trump won the state’s 2020 presidential election. Judge Mary Kay Holthus ruled there was insufficient evidence to prove the defendants intended to deceive government officials. The defendants, including former Nevada Republican Party chair Michael McDonald and former Clark County Republican Party chair Jesse Law, argued their actions were “political theater” intended to preserve their rights rather than an attempt to commit forgery.

In a separate legal development, El Paso and Harris counties in Texas, along with communities in Tennessee and Ohio, have filed lawsuits against the Department of Homeland Security. The plaintiffs challenge new requirements for federal grants that mandate transitions to paper ballots, manual audits, and the use of the SAVE system for voter registration verification. The counties argue these requirements undermine election security, impose significant costs, and threaten approximately $200 million in national grant funding.
