US leisure trends show fragmented daily schedules and shifting retirement habits

Recent data from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that Americans aged 15 and older averaged 5.2 hours of leisure and sports activity per day in 2025. This time is increasingly fragmented, with television viewing accounting for 2.6 daily hours, while recreational computer use rose to 37 minutes. Socializing has seen a decline, dropping from 41 to 35 minutes over the last decade.

Leisure patterns vary significantly by age; adults aged 75 and older averaged 7.4 leisure hours per day, compared to 3.9 hours for those aged 35 to 44. While digital activities often occur in short bursts, live sports remain a consistent anchor in weekly routines due to their fixed schedules.

In a related shift in lifestyle management, some retirees are seeking part-time roles to fill downtime or pursue personal interests. For example, former aerospace engineers Jerry and Peter Wong transitioned from long careers at Northrop Grumman to part-time work at Disney. Jerry Wong, who retired in 2022, now works as a photographer at Disneyland Resort to maintain an active schedule and reconnect with childhood interests.
