US lifts 12-year maritime entry restriction on Nigerian vessels

International shipping companies operating in Nigeria have welcomed the United States Coast Guard’s decision to lift a 12-year Condition of Entry (CoE) for vessels originating from Nigerian ports and destined for the United States.

Industry leaders, including Maersk and Ocean Network Express (ONE), noted that the removal of this restriction serves as evidence of improved maritime security in Nigeria. Representatives from Maersk stated that the move strengthens Nigeria’s position in global trade and signals that the region is perceived as a safer environment for shipping expansion.

Officials from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and industry executives suggested that the lifting of the CoE reflects the success of long-term security efforts. The change is expected to facilitate easier direct trade between Nigeria and the U.S. for both importers and exporters.
