US local governments reconsider Flock Safety ALPR camera contracts

Pinal County, Arizona, cancelled its contract with Flock Safety after Sheriff Ross Teeple cited Fourth Amendment concerns over the company’s automated license‑plate reader (ALPR) cameras. The decision was announced at the county board meeting on August 5, 2026.

In Springville, Alabama, city officials are reviewing their agreement with Flock Safety following an audit that uncovered an officer’s misuse of the camera system and concluded the service does not justify its cost. Mayor Austin Phillips said the review, conducted over a week and a half, found only eight felony arrests linked to the cameras and raised questions about the value of the 13‑camera deployment. The city is exploring ways to shorten or terminate the contract, which has about two years remaining.

Both jurisdictions are reassessing the privacy, legal, and financial implications of the ALPR technology.
